The Hoyland Lowe Stand, Barnsley - Not open to the public. Free entry
Details
Accessibility:
There is only access to the Lowe Stand via a narrow public footpath. Therefore it would be advisable to park in Hawshaw Lane and then take the footpath. The Lowe Stand is not open to the public, and it is in a state of disrepair. There is fencing surrounding the building so although you can view the building from the footpath, you cannot gain access to it. The footpath may not be accessible to wheelchair and pushchair users.
Brief Description:
The Hoyland Lowe is a Grade II Listed Building which was built in the 18th Century for The First Marquis of Rockingham. It stands 600 feet about sea level and was most likely used as a Huntsmans Lodge and observation point for gatherings and hunts. Between 1840 and 1920 it was a place of residence and various families lived in it. During the second world war it was used as an observation point. Over the last 20 years it has fallen into a state of disrepair, but The Hoyland Lowe Stand Trust has plans to obtain ownership and then restore it.
