Accessibility: 

Two steps to main front entrance but access ramp to a side entrance (on south side) accessed using bell adjacent to side access door.  No lift to first floor where Planetarium and male and female toilets can be found and to which access is via a total of 29 steps with 3 landings once inside the premises.  Three disability car parking bays can be found at the rear of the Museum; these are accessed off the A127 via Great Eastern Avenue taking a service road past the main car park and around the rear of the neighbouring Beecroft Art Gallery. 


Brief description: 

Museum housing local historical artefacts including the incredible finds from an Anglo-Saxon princely burial discovered in Prittlewell in 2003 (this discovery of a tomb contained numerous interesting as well as some unique artefacts and has been described as the UK's "Tutankhamun")

Directions: Located in central Southend immediately off the A127.  The A13 also takes you into central Southend and then using the Queensway ringroad you can gain access to the A127.  The museum is approximately 21 miles (40 minute) drive from junction 29 of the M25.

Southend Victoria Train Station (end terminus of branch line off the Great Eastern Main Line running from Shenfield to Southend)  is neighbouring the Museum and an approximate 2 minute walk over some 100 metres from station to Museum.  Buses from several outlying areas stop nearby outside the train station so the museum is well served by public transport.  Disability car parking is available (see Accessibility above) and general car parking available in the Beecroft car park located north of the neighbouring Beecroft Art Gallery and approximate 3 minute walk away.  


Amenities: 

General male and female toilets are available at first floor level (accessed via 29 steps including 3 landings).  There are no disability toilets although access is available to a single disability toilet in the neighbouring Beecroft Art Gallery.  There are no other facilities in the Museum but a cafe is available in the neighbouring Beecroft Art Gallery and in the nearby Southend Council Civic Centre.  Numerous shops and places to eat are available in the nearby town centre, the northern end of the main High Street and the Victoria Shopping Centre being approximately 4 minute walk away.
