Accessibility:

There is on-street parking directly opposite the main 'lychgate' church yard entrance on Old Church Road. There is a car park a few yards down the road but this is specifically for museum visitors. There is a second entrance at the north end of the church yard but this has a 12" slate panel as an obstacle to negotiate. The entrance and paths around the church are generally loose gravel and not very wide so care should be taken.

Brief Description:

The name of the church would suggest that it now sits on a pre-Norman site, but the current building dates from the 14th or 15th centuries at the earliest.

The A5 from London to Holyhead, which runs through the village, was opened in the 1820s and resulted in a large number of people visiting the area and attending church services. This led to the renovations in 1843, which included the removal of the gallery at the west end of the church and the addition of the north transept. Following the opening of the railway in 1863, and the resultant population growth, a new church, St Mary's, was constructed across the road and led to St Michael's being used for special services and burials only.
