Accessibility:

There is pay and display parking around the bar, including blue badge parking. There is level access through the gate, however there are steps up to the walls which are not wheelchair accessible. The closest public toilet is at the St George’s Field car park which includes wheelchair accessible facililties (access via RADAR key).


Brief Description:

Walmgate bar is the best preserved of the medieval gateways into the city of York. It is the only bar that still has its portcullis, inner doors and barbican. It originated in the 12th Century but most of it was built in the 14th Century. It was damaged by fire in 1489, during the Yorkshire Rebellion again Henry VII’s taxes. In 1644 it was damaged by cannon fire during the Siege of York in the English Civil War.

Turn right onto Walmgate.


From Rawcliffe via A19. Take Howard Drive to Shipton Road/A19. Continue on A19 for 2 miles. Turn left onto Gillygate/A1036. Turn right onto Lord Mayor’s Walk/A1036. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Heworth Green/A1036. Turn right onto Eboracum Way. Continue onto Hallfield Road. Continue straight onto James Street. Turn right onto Lawrence Street/A1079.
