Accessibility:

Groudle Glen Railway is situated in a small Glen about two miles North of Douglas. Parking is extremely limited on site and as the railway and tram line run directly next to the road, roadside parking is not an option. There is alternative parking available at the beach car park which can be found via Groudle Beach Road, 500 yards south of the railway towards Douglas.

Disability access is limited. In order to reach the Lion Rock Tea Rooms and Visitor Centre, visitors must either walk down some steps from the roadside or walk under an archway however this involves having to go over the railway and tram lines, therefore the ground is extremely uneven and  potentially dangerous if using a mobility aid of any kind. The website states "Access direct to the railway can be arranged, please email us in advance of your visit".

In order to reach the waiting area and benches visitors must cross the tracks.

Brief Description:

Groudle Glen Railway is the only voluntary owned and operated railway on the island. Originally opened as a steam railway in 1896 it brought visitors to a Zoo that was located next to the railway. It was closed down and operations stopped during World War 1 and again during World War 2. The zoo also closed down during World War 2 and with the lack of tourists the railway fell into disrepair. It was again officially opened in 1986 and since the railway has been offering a limited service.

Lion Rocks Tea Rooms and a visitor centre are available on site, however due to it being solely operated by volunteers opening times may vary.

Opening times are extremely limited. Journeys run on Sundays, May - September, 11am - 4:30pm and Wednesday Evenings, July - August, 7pm - 9pm. However, these may change so please check on the website provided below before your visit. Additional special events take place throughout the year, usually coinciding with the school holidays. A talking timetable can be accessed by calling 01624 670453.
