Details

Accessibility:

There is parking at the site but it is a five-minute walk (via a tunnel and a bridge) from the caves and centre. There are toilets on site. Unfortunately, the caves are not accessible to wheelchair users as the pathways are narrow and uneven. The Volcanism centre, however, is fully accessible.

Brief Description:

The São Vicente Caves were formed 890,000 years ago, by a volcanic eruption on the island; the caves showcase the resulting lava tubes. The Volcanism Centre complements the caves by taking you on a journey through the history of the formation of the Madeiran islands.
