Accessibility:

There are two pay-and-display car parks in Howden: Hailgate and Bishops Manor House; both offer long and short stay parking. There are public toilets in Charles Briggs Avenue which are open daily 5.00am – 7.00pm, and offer wheelchair accessible and baby changing facilities. Howden railway station has no access problems for wheelchair user as the access to the platforms is ramped via road over level crossing and there is step-free access from the car park to the station entrance. However, wheelchair users travelling alone may have difficulties exiting the car park as it has an uneven surface, and if the gates to the platforms are closed the latch on the inside cannot be reached.

Brief Description:

Howden is a small market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In 1080 William the Conqueror gave the town to the Bishops of Durham. The town is dominated by its minster. The church is still in use however the Chancel and Chapter House fell into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540. One of Howden’s most famous residents was Neville Shute who was the author of A Town Like Alice. Shute was also an aeronautical engineer and while he was living in Howden he helped to build the R100 Airship. Every year Howden hosts an agricultural show which incorporates a food and drink festival, livestock classes, a dog show and lots of other entertainment.
