Brief Description:
The Cooper Gallery was built in 1769 and was originally Barnsley Grammar School. It underwent renovation in 1881 and was then purchased by Samuel Joshua Cooper, a wealthy business man who was a very generous benefactor to the people of Barnsley. When he died in 1913 he left the Gallery to the people of Barnsley along with 200 paintings that he had collected on his travels through Europe. The gallery opened to the public in 1914. During the Second World War it served as a hospital and then an outpatients clinic and rehabilitation unit. In 1977 the South Yorkshire County Council took over the lease and turned it into a regional arts centre which houses permanent and temporary exhibitions.
