Accessibility:

There are several car parks close to the Town Hall, they are located at Westgate S70 2DL, County Way S70 2JW, Graham's Orchard S70 2ST, Churchfield S70 2DQ and  St Mary's Place S70 2DP. There is ramped access into the building which is located to the left of the main entrance. The museum is wheelchair accessible throughout, and most mobility scooters can be used. Two wheelchairs are available for use, it is advisable to book in advance by calling 01226 772500. There are two lifts available for the public. There are public toilets on all levels which include two wheelchair accessible toilets and a family welfare/baby changing room on the ground floor. There is dementia friendly signage and also interactive and textured puzzles and audio displays for the visually impaired. Some exhibits also have braille signage. A hearing induction loop system is available for those with hearing impairments. Assistance dogs are welcome.

Brief Description:

Experience Barnsley Museum and Discovery Centre is centred on the people and the history of Barnsley. The museum is full of artefacts donated by the people of Barnsley. The Archives and Discovery Centre is great for research, it is full of books, photographs, documents, maps and film so that visitors can discover the history of the area or of their family. There is a learning lab and also a changing exhibition gallery. The Town Hall houses the civic offices and council chamber. It was built in 1933, and the clock tower is an iconic symbol of the town.

From Wakefield via M1. Follow M1 and take exit 37 to A628 Barnsley/Manchester. Continue on Dodworth Road/A628. At Dodworth Roundabout take the 1st exit onto Dodworth Road/A628. At Townend Roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Shambles Street. Turn left onto St Mary’s Place and your destination will be on the right.

Open Monday to Friday 9-4, Saturday closed for events only. Sunday closed.

Parking:

There is lots of town centre parking available close to the museum, many of which are free at the weekend. They include Gateway Plaza, Peel Parade, Sacksville Street and Market Hill."
