Accessibility:

The Institute has full disability access through the main public entrance via Mandela Gardens. Short stay parking can be found on Lowgate Street, and long stay situated on Clarence Street. Both are a short walk away. Arrangements can be made with the institute prior to visiting for anyone in need of closer access parking.


Brief Description:

Wilberforce Institute was officially opened in 2006 by the former president of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor. The institute is for the study of slavery and emancipation, reflecting on the history and highlighting modern day slavery in today's world. Named after William Wilberforce, a hull MP who campaigned for the abolishment of slavery.

Directions:

Situated 5.5 miles NE of Hessle. Head NE on Hull Road. Staying on Hull Road through four roundabouts. At 5th roundabout/Hessle Road, take 3rd exit onto Priory Way. Turn left to merge onto Clive Sullivan Way/A63 for 3.7 miles. Exit A63 onto Market Place and turn first right onto Liberty Lane. At end of road turn left onto High Street. Hull central railway is a ten minute walk from the institute. Accessible by car, with car parks situated on Lowgate and Clarence Street. Bus services operate in and around the area.
