Brief Description:

Coventry has had three cathedrals - the ruined monastic building of St Mary's; St Michael's, a 14th-century Gothic structure that was left as ruins after the blitz in WWII; and the new St Michael's Cathedral. All of these, plus Holy Trinity Church, are within a short walk of each other within the Cathedral Quarter.

The 'new' Grade I listed sandstone cathedral was consecrated on 25 May 1962 and was designed by Sir Basil Spence to allow the Old Cathedral ruins to remain as a remembrance garden.

The interior contains Graham Sutherland's famous tapestry of Christ, the sculpture of the Mater Dolorosa by John Bridgeman, the John Piper-designed Baptistry window and the Great West Window (Screen of Saints and Angels) engraved by John Hutton.
